How to run this drill

Youth Football Practice Drills is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Mike”¦
Here is my suggestion:
Oklahoma Drill –
4 players, all positions.
This [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] teaches [tag]tackling[/tag], [tag]blocking[/tag], and running schemes.
Set up area about 10 feet wide with cones. They have to stay in the cones.

Two players line up on [tag]offense[/tag] and [tag]defense[/tag] lineman positions; the other two players fill running back and defensive back positions.   Give the [tag]running back[/tag] the ball, blow the whistle and the play begins just like a regular play.

The objective is to prevent the running back from getting through the [tag]defensive lineman[/tag] and defensive back.   The offensive lineman is to block the defensive lineman out of the play, while the running back attempts to get by the defensive back and stay within the cones. Switch positions.

Our boys loved this full contact drill and it really helped build skills.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
