How to run this drill

A Football Coach is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Eric”¦
I like the West Point Drill, especially early, when the pads have just been put on.

You need to have four [tag]linemen[/tag], two on each side of the ball, one [tag]offense[/tag] and one [tag]defense[/tag].   Next, have a LB behind the DL.   Have a HB and QB behind the OL.
Have one [tag]coach[/tag] behind the defense to show the offense which way the play will go, and the count.   QB pivots to playside and hands the ball off.   OL drive block to create a gap for the HB.

This [tag]football[/tag] drill also works with a FB and DB, and an extra OL and DL.   This is an excellent drill to see who likes to hit, and who shys away from [tag]hitting[/tag].   You can see if your LB is taking the correct first step, and see if the HB’s run over, or around the intended [tag]tackler[/tag].

Have the remaining team line up on both sides of the drill, it is fun and very intense.   Soon kids are jumping in to have a go at it.   Many times, some kids will just watch and not participate; this is a true warning sign that they do not like contact.   Its better to find out now, then later.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
