How to run this drill

Youth Football Conditioning – Sand Trap or Hills is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

One of my favorite training tools for [tag]youth football conditioning[/tag] is the sand trap. Whether you are on coaching in the park league or on a college staff, having your players run through sand is a very good way to increase speed, agility and endurance.

I usually run my players until I can visually see a sign of fatigue to set my interval time. Then run them for about 3 reps of that time. Ex: 10 mins X 3 reps = 30 mins. Keep your water bottles handy on site so that your players won’t dehydrate. It’s a tough regiment but in the fourth quarter when other teams are tired, your [tag]football[/tag] players will be looking for something to do. If a sand trap isn’t available running them up and down a hill or stairs is a good substitute, but only the sand will help against ankle injuries and build speed up quickly.

We use a conditioning drill that has 1 line on the goal line on a hash and 1 line of ball carriers at the pylon.   The ball carrier must run down the sideline while the other line takes proper angles to meet the ball carrier and prevent a touchdown.   It is a good [tag]football drill[/tag] because kids are sprinting 50+ yards, working on tackling, and allows everyone to be a ball carrier.   If you have mismatches, you might have to start or delay a line.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
