How to run this drill

Youth Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Mark,
Here is a [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] we use for the snap count.

All the plays circle around the QB. The   QB says the count then continues with the [tag]snap count[/tag].   All the players must clap in unison when the count comes up. If not we either run or bear crawl to our favorite spot and start over. We do this till we get 6 in a row correct.

This is done every [tag]practice[/tag]. For a twist we use a center and clap on ball movement.

From Allen,
We begin practice by playing a quick game of tag.

The last 4, or the persons tagged at a certain points (i.e.: 3rd, 5th, 11th, and 17th) are the leaders for stretching and exercises.

This gets the blood pumping and allows for a random selection of leaders for the day. Two or Three people are chosen at random to be “it” and a boundary is designated by cones. This exercise also helps with [tag]team building[/tag] and makes practice “fun”.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
