How to run this drill

Texas Football Coach is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

John got the inspiration for this [tag]coaching[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] from [tag]Texas football coach[/tag] Mack Brown.   It includes a fresh idea for a [tag]goal line drill[/tag].   Try it out and let me know what you think!Texas Football Coach

From John”¦
I picked this up a few years ago at a coach’s clinic.     Texas Coach Mack Brown uses it.

GOAL LINE DRILL (LB & RB) this is a 1-on-1 LB vs.RB drill
Set-up 2 cones five yards apart on the goal line and lay down a [tag]tackling dummy[/tag] parallel to the goal line at 3-rd line.

Put LB/Defender on [tag]goal line[/tag] between the cones (Heels on the goal line), Breakdown position with legs and pumping.

Start RB with ball at the 5-yd line and have him try to score a TD by [tag]running[/tag] right or left.   The RB does not go over the dummy (no cutbacks, power run only) he tries to score between the dummy and the cone.   The [tag]linebacker[/tag] has to react and hit the [tag]running back[/tag] and prevent him from scoring.   The LB has to tackle with his helmet in front of the RB and his arms explode with an uppercut motion (grabbing cloth on the back of the RB jersey), keep feet driving.   The LB has to stop the RB’s forward progress and drive him out of bounds before he crosses the goal line.

Great drill to teach the RB how to power for a short yardage TD or 1st Down and teaches the LB how to stop the RB from gaining that critical TD or 1st down.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
