How to run this drill

Practice Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Rick…
One of my favorites is working with my [tag]linemen[/tag].

Last year I made 3 linemen shoots.   This year I’m upgrading my shoots to 7.   These shoots make it so my line stays low.

One [tag]football[/tag] drill I’m using is to put all linemen into the shoots in front of the sled and we keep firing from the shoots to the sled (make sure the sled does not move).   This drill does 2 things:   It keeps my linemen low and it keeps them hitting low with their heads up.

My linemen shoots I made out of PVC pipe.   You can buy the shoots for around $150.00 or make them for around $10 each.   One [tag]play[/tag] I really like is the [tag]reverse fly pass[/tag].   Play two is the double reverse on the kick-offs.

Works well.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
