How to run this drill

Pop Warner Youth Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Donnie”¦
A [tag]football[/tag] [tag]conditioning[/tag] tip that is working very well with my team is-

We separate the boys into Group A, Group B, and Group C.

Group A- is our [tag]offensive[/tag]/[tag]defensive[/tag] lineman, our big boys

Group C- is our burners, our fastest players, [tag]receivers[/tag], running backs, defensive backs

Group B- is everyone in between- [tag]linebackers[/tag], quarterbacks, fullbacks

Whatever conditioning we are doing it is set up differently for A, B, and C, so that each player gets maximum results.   Think about it.   20 yard [tag]sprints[/tag] are harder for Group A athletes than Group C athletes.

So for sprints, Group B lines up 10 yards behind Group A.   And Group C is 5 yards farther behind Group B.   For hills, Group A starts at the base of the hill, Group B starts about 10 yards from the base of the hill, and Group C starts about 15 yards from the hill.

The entire team is still doing the same conditioning drill, but all players are getting the same hard work out depending on their body type.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
