How to run this drill

Free Lineman Football Drills – The Circle Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

The Circle Drill
Have your team make a big circle.   Give a ball to any player and have him start running along inside the circle.     Call out a player to run across the circle to make the tackle.   He keeps going until he makes the [tag]tackle[/tag].   When he makes the tackle, he gets up and runs the [tag]football[/tag] while the other player goes back to his place on the circle and takes a knee.   You keep doing this until everyone is on a knee.     This teaches the tackler to take a proper angle to make a tackle.

Here’s another [tag]football drill[/tag] we like.   I have all my linemen get on their knees across from another lineman to where their hands reach the other flat handed on the chest.   They take turns on the coach’s whistle to bring their hands up from their sides and extend their hands into the person across from them.   Thumbs up, palm inward starting with elbows bent then extending to full reach.

If they can do this from their hands down to their sides they can surely get the jump on the [tag]defensive linemen[/tag] trying to put a rush on.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
