How to run this drill

Football Youth Coaching is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Dustin
One of the biggest problems we have is getting our kids to turn loose and not fear contact. This [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] has worked miracles with some of our most timid players.

Split the team into two lines, five yards apart, and facing one another.

One kid, the [tag]receiver[/tag], steps into the “chute” from the end of line one and receives the ball, while another kid steps in from the opposite end of line two as the [tag]tackler[/tag]. All the other players choose a side and cheer on their favorite. They are so close to the action that they can’t help getting fired up!

The [tag]coach[/tag] can protect smaller, weaker players by controlling the match-ups.
Sometimes we let the first player in “call out” another player they want to challenge (this can really get interesting).

In three years we’ve never had one player injured during this drill and our kids beg for “The Chute” every single day.

From Enrique
Monkey Rolls

3 players standing in 1 line 1 2 3 , 2 jumps out over to 3, 3 jumps over to 2, 1 jumps over to 2, then 3 jumps over 2 again and this keeps going.   If a player has to wait to jump they should be chopping the feet.

What I do is make a competition of teams and the team that can do this the longest wins. If a player is still on the ground when its his turn to jump, that team is out. As the season progresses the kids get faster.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
