How to run this drill

Football Training Drills – Lone Ranger Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

As a coach, I often turn to   the classic but effective [tag]football training drills[/tag]. This drill teaches hand-eye coordination and basic receiving skills.

Position 4-5 receivers on a line and have them face a lone receiver positioned about 5 yards from them. Give one [tag]football[/tag] to the lone receiver and one ball to one of the others.

The football receiver drill begins with the lone receiver throwing a pass to a receiver in the line. At the same time, the receiver with the ball in line passes to the lone receiver.

Keep this cycle up for a sufficient amount of reps, then slide everyone sideways until each player has a chance to be the “Lone Ranger”.

Coaching Detail: Make sure each receiver is locking the ball in and catching with their hands.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
