How to run this drill

Football Tackling Drills – Form Tackle Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

When we are working on [tag]football tackling drills[/tag] we always run a form tackle drill prior to a “live” tackle drill to refresh and promote proper form during “live” drills.

The form tackle drill we most often use is ball carrier and tackler approach each other at a 45 degree angle (ball in outside arm).     Tackler – breaks down, hits, wraps, lifts and drives/carries 5 yards at about 50%. The ball carrier is to stand tall and/or even jump or lift up to assist in the lift and carry.

If the player doesn’t break down and get low, they will not be able to lift.
If the kid doesn’t hit or make contact, they will not be able to wrap.
If the kid doesn’t wrap they will not be able to lift/carry.
Drive promotes running through the tackle and builds leg drive.

Note – we teach face mask on [tag]football[/tag] – if the kid has their head on wrong side of the ball carrier, the ball carrier will often be upended or off balance making it tough to carry. This [tag]football drill[/tag] will be very awkward or even impossible if kids are not using proper form.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
