How to run this drill

Football Special Teams – FG Team Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Jason…
A   [tag]football special teams drill[/tag]:

Have your FG team stand on the sideline.   The [tag]football coach[/tag] stands in the middle of the field around the 15 yard line.   He throws the [tag]football[/tag] into the air and when it hits the ground he begins counting down from 10 seconds.

The FG team has 10 seconds to get to the ball, line up, and kick the game winning FG.   This incorporates the sense of urgency you may experience at the end of the game with no timeouts left.

To add a sense of pressure, you can say that if the kick is missed, the whole team runs a lap, if it’s good- the COACH will run a lap!   That is the closest you can come to the real pressure a kicker will face in a game.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
