How to run this drill

Football Special Teams Drills – Returner Contain is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

This is a [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] from my [tag]football special teams drills[/tag] that pits the returner against two [tag]special teams[/tag] [tag]contain[/tag] men.Football Special Teams Drills

What you need – Two [tag]contain men[/tag] running down the field.   One returner.   Set up pylons to indicate where the contain men need to keep the runner.

How this drill works – The ball is kicked (or thrown) down to the [tag]returner[/tag], and as soon as it is kicked, the contain men must get down the field to prevent the returner from getting to the outside of them.

The returner will try to get to the outside in this drill, and they must try to go outside of the cones to do so.   The contain men must not let the returner get outside of them, or they will be penalized with conditioning drills.

The contain men must not take a direct angle to the ball, they need to angle their attack.   If they go directly at the [tag]runner[/tag], they risk the runner just blowing right by them on the outside.   Teach your players to patrol their lane first, until they have to make a last minute cut.

Results – This drill is going to help teach your players the importance of contain – in any aspect of the game.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
