How to run this drill

Football Practice Drills is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Nephi,
I don’t have any great pearls of wisdom, but here is one from many years ago.
I like this [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] because it gets the young first time players used to the sound and feel of a hit. It may also help with any fear. We called it the gauntlet.

You form your team into two straight lines facing each other 2 yards apart. Give one player the ball and send him up the middle. Everyone gets to take a pop at him, or tries to strip the ball.
Teaches great [tag]ball control[/tag] and proper technique for ball handlers, and is a lot of fun for all.
The guys who stay low, move fast, and protect the ball do the best.

Great for the younger players.

From Shawn,
Last year we had about 75% of our kids who had never played football before. We eventually used the first 30 minutes of each [tag]practice[/tag] doing what we called “stations”.

Each day we would have 3 different stations (groups got 10 minutes at each) where we would do drills such as form [tag]tackling[/tag], agility, 1 on 1’s. We broke the kids up into groups that were “similar”. Some days it would be positional, some days by weight and some days by height. Mixing that up kept things interesting.

The [tag]fundamentals[/tag] of the kids improved vastly through the year and we ended up losing the city final by 7 to a team that had beaten us 33-0 earlier in the year.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
