How to run this drill

Football Practice Drills is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

I want to give you an idea for a [tag]practice[/tag] [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag].

It’s called a [tag]box drill[/tag].
I put four cones about five yards apart in a square formation.   I would have half the team with the ball at one corner and the other of half the team tackling across from them. Then when the whistle blows both players go and run around the cone on their right.   Then meet at the middle with the [tag]tackler[/tag] trying to make the [tag]tackle[/tag].

If the tackler missed I would explain why and if they do a nice tackle then I would tell them.   Then they would switch sides.   Keep going till both sides have run with the ball and tackled.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
