My [tag]football drill[/tag] is a pretty simple teaching technique for pulling offensive linemen. When coaching certain offensive linemen, I often run into guys that, for whatever reason, have a tough time understanding how to take a pull step and get back into the hole. They have a tough time, in live [tag]football drills[/tag], getting back into the line without tripping over the down-blocker. The basic [tag]football[/tag] coaching point is to drop step and get back into the hole (on a tight trap pull or a fold block to a backer).
Here is what I do. I take a shield, one of the longer ones, and an empty bucket, one of the big 15-20 gallon jobs that we get the paint for the lines on our field in. The idea is to place the bucket partially in the lineman’s path to the shield, which is oriented for a pull angle (tight trap or fold block). The lineman must get around the bucket, on his second step, and reach the far side of the bag, without hitting/stepping on either. First step drop step – push off that first step to get the second back into the hole (around the bucket – acting as the downblocker, and to the far side of the bag – into the hole).
I call it “The Bucket Drill“, and it helps us to train guys who we either need to get comfortable pulling quickly, or who are having a difficult time with the technique in general.
