How to run this drill

Football Offensive Blocking is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Chuck,
Square Drill

4 cones 10 yard square
Entire team around the square
One player is a oOffensive line
One player is a Defensive line
One player is a Running Back with a ball

On cadence the [tag]offensive line[/tag] fires off, hits the [tag]defensive line[/tag] and drives them out of the square. Once they have done that the O line is finished and leaves the square. D line then has to [tag]tackle[/tag] the running back.

Most of the time the O line will not drive the man out of the square. It becomes a tough [tag]football[/tag] [tag]blocking[/tag] drill for the O line.     You can also work the D line on swim, rip etc to get to the ball carrier. The [tag]running back[/tag] must learn to follow his [tag]blocker[/tag] by staying on the butt of the offensive line. Outside players are routing for their guy.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
