How to run this drill

Football Linemen Drills – Offensive Line Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

I have used these [tag]football linemen drills[/tag] at both the youth level and the high school level and they work equally well at both levels. This drill works on getting off on the count, getting out of stance, pulling technique, footwork and quickness in general.

Purpose:   Offensive line drill for pulling and sealing and trap blocking to improve technique and quickness.
Needed:   A blocking shield, stop watch and clip board.
Setup:   O-lineman lines up in his position on the LOS.   5 yds down the LOS in the direction of the pull, station a D lineman standing just about on the LOS.   A couple yards behind the D lineman (simulating a Linebacker) have another player with a blocking shield

Object: Linemen are to pull down the line using the proper technique, turn the corner where the D-lineman is standing at 5 yards and block the man holding the blocking shield.   Teach the proper technique to your pulling linemen, then ask them to do it one at a time.

Next set up a contest by timing the linemen for the time it takes from the snap count until they hit the man with the blocking shield.   Only attempts using a balanced stance and proper technique count.   Fastest man sits out two wind sprints at end of practice (or whatever other prize is desired).   Be sure to record times, because the next day the winner is the man with the most improved time.

The stopwatch provides them tangible evidence of their progress.   Furthermore, in this   [tag]football drill[/tag], using proper technique will result in quicker times.   Linemen are competing against themselves and each other.   Timing it really gets them focused and trying.   The competition makes it fun.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
