How to run this drill

Football Coaching Drills – Early Bird Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Anthony”¦
I call this [tag]football drill[/tag] the “Early Bird Drill”

1. You need 2 players that are athletically compatible.

2. Both [tag]football[/tag] players lie down on their backs.

3. The players are lying in a head to head position but 1-1/2 yds apart (Coaches discretion) not too far apart

4. When the [tag]football coach[/tag] blows the whistle both players quickly get off of the ground and face each other to:

A. Player 1 Pass Block while Player 2 tries to penetrate behind blocker.

B. Ball Carrier and Tackler

C.Form Tackling, etc.

There are multiple things that you can do with this football drill. In my past experience the players love it and request it frequently.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
