How to run this drill

Flag Football Practice Drills – Flag Tag is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

Every [tag]football practice[/tag] and warm up session before games we do a couple of different flag pull drills to get the kids warmed up and ready to go for the flag. This is one of their favorite [tag]flag football practice drills[/tag]!

Flag Tag
I have 9 kids on my [tag]football[/tag] team so we set up about a 20 yard by 20 yard square area.
Rules:
If anyone pulls your flag you are out.
If anyone goes out of bounds (outside the 20 x 20 grid) you are out.
2 boys are “it” and they try and grab and get as many people out in 1 minute as they can or down to the last two.
The last two standing are then “it” for the next round. We typically do about 3 rounds so that different boys get a chance.

This [tag]football drill[/tag] teaches grabbing flags and team work to get to the last two flags.   I have coached the boys that they can work better as a team of two to grab a flag than running independently after a single boy.

We have also done it as a free for all the first time through where anyone can grab anyones flag and the last two standing start the next round.   The kids are always asking when are we going to play Flag Tag.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
