How to run this drill

Drills for Youth Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

One of the keys to having a successful youth [tag]football[/tag] team is having a strong offensive line with superior blocking skills.   These drills for youth football will ensure that your offensive line blocks to their full capacity while your other offensive players are able to perform the plays that gain yardage and points.Drills for Youth Football

When introducing these blocking [tag]drills for youth football[/tag] to your players, make sure to start slowly.   By demonstrating the [tag]drills[/tag] at half-speed your players will gain a better understanding of the proper blocking stance and execution of a successful block.

For the first [tag]drill[/tag] have your [tag]offensive linemen[/tag] line up side-by-side along the line of scrimmage.   When you blow the whistle, each player must assume their blocking stances and hold them until the whistle is sounded for a second time.   While the players are in their blocking stances, make sure that their feet are shoulder-width apart and pointing towards the goal line.

When stepping out, each offensive lineman should keep their head up, their back foot firmly planted and their body low with their knee pointing to the ground.   Repeat this drill at least 10 times every practice for a quicker snap into the blocking stance.

The next of the drills for youth football will also help your offensive linemen with their [tag]blocking[/tag] skills.   This drill requires an even number of players, with half acting as defenders and half as offensive linemen.   Let’s say you’ve divided your team into groups of 6.   Have 3 players line up as offensive and 3 facing them as defense.   When the whistle is blown, the linemen are to execute a basic drive block, snapping either left or right into the defenders.

Again, in this drill watch for proper blocking stance including correct leg follow through and holding the head up.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
