How to run this drill

Defensive Drills for Football – The Bull Ring is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

If you’re looking for [tag]defensive drills for football[/tag], try this [tag]football drill[/tag] for blocking with your team.   The drill is called ‘The Bull Ring‘.   The idea is to get a blocker to give you 3 to 4 seconds of blocking a defender.

Your players form a wide circle with a cone in the center.   The [tag]football coach[/tag] will call a blocker out and put him in front of another player still in the circle who will be the defender.   The coach starts them off with a whistle or cadence and begins to count out loud the seconds the blocker is earning as the defender tries to make it to the center of the circle and knock the cone down.

The rest of the teammates in the circle see and hear what record number of seconds achieved are as they gain an enthusiasm about blocking and wanting their turn to beat the record high score.   This is really good for youth [tag]football[/tag] players to help them get enthusiastic about blocking.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
