How to run this drill

Coaching Youth Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Coming up with new drills for [tag]coaching youth football[/tag] can sometimes be a challenge.   Here’s a [tag]youth[/tag] [tag]tackling[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] that Patrick sent to me that works well.Coaching Youth Football

From Patrick”¦
First   [tag]football[/tag] practice for [tag]linebackers[/tag] to learn proper stance and then moving into tackle situation using the mirror drill.

Have linebackers stand facing one another across the line of [tag]scrimmage[/tag] and analyze each other as [tag]coach[/tag] walks the line.
Focusing on keeping head up is so important for young kids in first year of tackle football.
Many young kids have the idea that tackling is putting your head down and ramming into the ball carrier and making impact.   That can spell injury disaster for young players.

Once stance is analyzed then have linebackers take turns moving (walking) into tackle situation.
Analyze again and watch for “[tag]heads up[/tag]” tackling.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
