How to run this drill

Coaching Football – Receiver Drills is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

This is a [tag]football drill[/tag] I use to force the quarterback to read all of his receivers and find the open man.   If you’re [tag]coaching football[/tag], give this a try with your team.   It can be done with or without a QB/center exchange.

Place 4 men at varying distances downfield, between seven to 25 yds.   I usually place one, near the sideline, to simulate a hitch; one man 10 to 12 yards deep in the middle of the field; one on a hash mark; and one man at 20 to 25 yds.

With their backs turned away from the [tag]quarterback[/tag], I signal the order in which they will turn to the quarterback to catch his pass. The QB does not know the order in which they will turn. He must scan all 4 players to determine which one has turned around. He must then complete the pass.

In my offense he does a three step drop before completing the pass. While there are no DB’s in this [tag]football[/tag] receiver drill, the point is to allow him to scan the entire field to find the open man. Both the QB and the receivers really enjoy this drill.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
