8 CONE DRILL

Use four lines of players with cones 5 yards apart.
At the whistle, everyone runs to the opposite cone, touches it and comes out to do their job.   The ball carrier can only run within the boundaries of the cones and reads the block of his lineman to determine the best route to take.   The good blockers usually hit the first defender and move on to the second defender.     The tacklers get rid of the blocker and tackle the ball carrier before he reaches the last cones (touchdown).

This is a very fast paced football drill !   As soon as a tackle or touchdown is made the players get out of the way because the next group of (4) are being whistled to begin. Players exit the drill and go to the back of the next line over.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
