How to run this drill

Coaching Football – Bull in the Ring is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

One [tag]football drill[/tag] that I use in practice is “Bull in the Ring”.Coaching Football

Take all players and spread them out in a large circle (ring).   Each player is given a number, and it helps if the [tag]football coach[/tag] keeps track of which numbers have been called.

All players need to be wearing flags.   Put one player into the ring and give them a football.   Call a number that indicates that that player should enter the ring and try to make a tackle.   Have all players making up the ring count down from 10.   If the defensive player makes the tackle, he becomes the ball carrier.   If not then the running back maintains control of the ball, and another player is called to become the defensive player.   If one player keeps control of the ball for 3 attempts the coach can call two players to be on defense at the same time.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
