From Dan”¦
For all my [tag]offensive[/tag] people that may handle the ball, do a [tag]football[/tag] drill called “Speed Tucks” to reduce [tag]turnovers[/tag] and improve the players ability to gain additional yardage.

We normally have two to three [tag]ball handlers[/tag] performing the drill at one time and one player stands behind each player w/ a hand held blocking pad in a horizontal position at the ball handlers’ elbow height.

The idea is to start with the ball tucked under one arm and move it as fast as possible to the other arm.   We see how many tucks they can do in 30 seconds.   A [tag]tuck[/tag] is counted by the person behind them and only counts if the ball handler’s elbow hits the blocking pad.   This insures that ball is fully tucked away.

Once a player becomes comfortable w/ tucking and re-tucking the ball properly, the more naturally they move it to the proper arm while in the game.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
