How this drill works – The object of the [tag]drill[/tag] is to help build the quick burst reaction of defensive linemen. This drill is set up with the DL with a shoulder harness, and lined up to the outside shoulder of the coach. The coach will be ready with an arm dummy.
When the whistle blows, the defensive lineman will make a quick move on the dummy and then get to the QB.
Defensive linemen need a quick burst on order to pass the offensive linemen. It is this quick burst that gives them a head start on the pass rush. By having the shoulder harness attached to the body (or around the waist), resistance is provided, building more powerful quick twitch reaction.
Result – Defensive linemen will have a quick first step and can get to the quarterback a lot quicker.
