How to run this drill

Football Footwork Drills – String It Out is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

The defensive players learned to turn a play inside, but they can also use these [tag]football footwork drills[/tag] to string out a play by stuffing the different gaps and taking on blocks early in an offensive play’s development.Football Footwork Drills

What you need – You can field a full offense and defense for this [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag], but it should only be run at half speed to illustrate the tactic.

How this drill works – On any play, pursuit is important.   Pursuit on an outside play should try to plug up all holes and take on all blockers so there is no blocking downfield for a runner.

In this drill, the [tag]defense[/tag] has to try to plug all of the holes and take on all of the blockers in order to string the outside running play right to the sideline.

Result – Filling holes and taking on blocks makes it hard for an RB to find a place to run.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
