How to run this drill

Football Defensive Drills – Jump Timing is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Getting the ball at its highest point is a good skill for [tag]defensive backs[/tag] to work on.   Use these [tag]football defensive drills[/tag] with your defensive backs and instantly improve your defense.Football Defensive Drills

What you need – You can either run this [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] against other defensive backs, or you can have the defensive backs work against [tag]receivers[/tag].

How this drill works – The [tag]coach[/tag] or a QB can throw the ball up for grabs in this drill, but it essentially pits two players against one another in a jump ball situation.   Often times the ball is just thrown up for a receiver to grab and the defender that can time his jump effectively can often break up the play.

DBs should work on seeing the ball in the air, and watching the trajectory – essentially figuring out where it is going to go.   Then they need to make sure when the ball is at a particular height, they are able to plant and jump up to knock the ball away, or intercept it.

Result – Defensive backs with better [tag]jump timing[/tag] will [tag]intercept[/tag] or defense more passes that come their way.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
