Take a look at this submission from Brek, one of my subscribers. A great suggestion for [tag]football coaching drills[/tag] that can work with all age groups.
Here is a [tag]football drill[/tag] that I like because it teaches good [tag]football tackling[/tag] and running, and it is also a hit with the kids. We call it “Meet Me in the Alley”.
I am sure that this [tag]football[/tag] drill is new to no one, but you basically make two straight lines with your offensive players in one line, and your defensive players in the line opposite the offense which creates the alley in between. I like to make the alley between 5 and 7 yards wide. The first kid in your “offense” line will take the football and turn outside and run down the length of the line, then turn into the alley. The first kid on the opposite side of the “defense” line will start on the opposite end of the line and do the same thing. The two kids will meet up in the alley and either the defender will make a tackle, or the ball carrier will get by and score. I coach ten year olds, so our rule is that if the ball carrier scores, the defender does 10 push-ups. If the ball carrier is tackled, he does 10 push-ups.
This football drill seems to really get the kids fired up, and builds some unity with the offense and the defense. Sometimes we let them alternate so that the defense kids get to run the ball, and our offense guys get to make some hits.
