How to run this drill

Football Basic Drills – Drill from Down Under is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

Here’s one of the [tag]football basic drills[/tag] that was sent to me recently from a coach in Australia.   Yes, they do play in football there too!

Place the players in a circle with the [tag]football coach[/tag] in the middle (Don’t make the circle too big or small, it will lose the effect).

Each offensive player has a defensive player on both sides of him. The coach throws the ball to a random offensive player and that player steps back outside the circle and runs anti-clockwise around the outside. Once the ball carrier has left his position the defensive players both sides of the ball carrier will step back and run clockwise around the outside of the circle.

All players run at sprint speed until they approach the ball carrier they then break down and complete the tackle. Ideally the defensive player to the right of the ball carrier will lead the tackle and the secondary player will then impact the pair completing the tackle to the ground.

Coach is watching for speed, technique, timing, team work also looking for the strip if possible.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
