This [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] is called “Spider in the Web.” It is an open field [tag]tackling drill[/tag]. The objective of this drill is to see how your players [tag]tackle[/tag] in the open field while making a competition among the team. This is how it works.

Divide your team into groups of 5-6 players each. One group will be the [tag]tackling[/tag] group. The other groups will be the [tag]runners[/tag]. The runners will station themselves on the sideline. The tackling group will be in the middle of the field spread out so each player is about 5 yards apart.

The boundaries for this drill will span sideline to sideline and from goal line to the 30-yard line. One group of runners is called to run from one sideline to the other trying not to get tackled. The tackling group is trying to tackle as many of the runners as they can. If a player is tackled, he must stand outside the goal line.

As one group of runners makes it across the field, another group of runners is called. Play continues until all of the running groups have run from one sideline to the other. Count the players that have gotten tackled and that will be the number for the tackling group.

Those players that were tackled may rejoin their group for another game of Spider in the Web. Another group comes out to be the tackling group and play begins again. The group who tackles the most players is the winner of this competitional drill.
