How to run this drill

Coaching Youth Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Calvin,
The All In One [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drill[/tag] I found on the Internet-Kids love it.

Have players get in single file behind [tag]tackling dummy[/tag]. On whistle have them pick up dummy and chop their feet. On next whistle (at [tag]coach[/tag]’s pace) have player drop bag and run over 3 bags set about 3yrds apart.

Then have 2 coaches or players 5 yards apart with hand held shields give pop to player running. Then have [tag]tackling[/tag] dummy with football on top. Have player make form [tag]tackle[/tag] which should make football become a fumble and make player then recover fumble by wrapping his body around the football on the ground.   Next have player put football back on top of tackling dummy for next player.

From Raul,

I like to use this for a Quickness Drill.

The drill starts out with 2 players 5-6 yds apart. 1st Player takes off and the 2nd chases in a figure 8 pattern covering 20 yds total. Partner players of equal speed, backs with backs, [tag]linemen[/tag] with linemen.

You can run the pattern until the 2nd player catches the first; or run the sequence once and they get back in line.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
