How to run this drill

Coaching Football Defense is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

SCOOPING TENNIS BALLS

Here is one of my favorite [tag]defense[/tag] line [tag]football[/tag] [tag]drills[/tag]. It is for shooting gaps, but also helps I guys stay low.

3 cones (or dummies) in a line. Depending on size of players varies to spacing.

2 Tennis balls–1 each placed in gaps.

D Line man lines up head up on center dummy. To shoot the gap we ask our players to be low and get “small”.

If we are asking our player to shoot the gap to the left, he stays low, rotates right shoulder 90, scoops tennis ball with right hand as he proceeds through gap. Reverse to other side.

Its also easy to remind players during game times that we need them to scoop tennis balls, if we see poor technique.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
