How to run this drill

Youth Football Practice – Sprint Tackle is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

Here is an idea for a [tag]youth football practice[/tag].   If you are coaching 8-9   year olds, keeping their attention is sometimes a challenge. Here is a [tag]football drill[/tag] to do at the end of [tag]football practice[/tag].

Instead of running wind sprints, run a drill I call “sprint tackle“. To start the drill, pick 3 players to stand on the 15 yard line, then all of the remaining players line up on the goal line between the hash marks. When the whistle blows all of the players attempt to run to the 30 yard line.   The 3 players on the 15 yard line start tackling other players, the last 3 not tackled get to start on the 15 yard line next time. Once a player is tackled he is now a “tackler”.

Do this [tag]football[/tag] drill for about 15   minutes. Most players run around 20-25 sprints in this time period, and they have a lot fun trying to see who is the last man standing. AND yes, the last man standing has to try and go against the rest of the team, and no running out of the hash marks!

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
