The best drill that we use for our offense line is the Hula Hoop drill. We had a problem with the lineman on offense standing up too tall during games.

You get the hula hoops and place over the linemen while in down position. When they fire off the ball on the snap count their body should be positioned so as the hoop does not fall to the ground.   If it does they are standing up too straight and tall off the snap. It worked really well for the boys and it was a fun drill.

Here is another one of the lineman [tag]football drill[/tag]s that I do with my team. This drill is to teach the defender to run at a angle towards the ball carrier and tackle and the receiver learns to beat a one on one tackle.

We setup cones out about 40 yards by 20 yards. At the corner cone we have the receiver with the ball and about 5 to 10 yards back we have the defender. The defender will be 5 to 10 yds back but also 10 to 15 yds to the right of the receiver. On the coaches whistle the receiver runs the 40 and the defender runs at an angle towards the receiver.

Then after 10 to 15 mins, I add a blocker into the mix so the receiver has 40 yds to run and 20 yds width to try to get the other end.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
