How to run this drill

Youth Football Drills – The Tornado is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

We had many [tag]youth football drills[/tag] that we practiced with our tiny mite [tag]football[/tag] team, but if I had to pick one that works on almost everything, it would be the “Tornado”. Don’t forget, this [tag]football drill[/tag] is for the younger age group.

The tornado goes like this :

  • The team lines up side by side, facing the opposing end zone.
  • A [tag]football coach[/tag] stands behind them, and throws the football to a desired location, long, short, it doesn’t matter both are good.
  • The players then run to the ball and jump on it like it was a fumble.
  • The player that gets it, stays at that location for the next round and blocks whom ever he chooses.
  • The next player that gets it stays and also blocks, and so on until everyone has retrieved the ball.

This was a great drill for us because, at the end of it, the player who got the ball first owed me only 1 push up. The second kid owed me 2, all the way to 14. This football drill works on several skills–running, blocking, avoidance, ball location, closing in, and determination.

This put initiative in the team. It’s not easy for a 6 year old to do 14 push ups. It made them strong mentally and physically.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
