How to run this drill

Youth Football Drills – Tackle Monster is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

If you are looking for [tag]youth football drills[/tag] give this one a try. It is a   simple and effective open field tackling [tag]football drill[/tag] that we call “Tackle Monster”.     This drill works best with 7-10 year olds.

Cone off a 20 yard by 20 yard area. The [tag]football[/tag] drill starts with 1-5 Tackle Monsters standing 5-10 yards from on off the sides. (The number of Tackle Monsters can vary depending on how many players are on team.)   The rest of team is ready and facing the Tackle Monsters.

When the whistle blows the Tackle Monsters must tackle at least one football player or they are out.   The non-Tackle Monster’s goal is to get to the other side without being tackled.

The one primary thing that should be maintained is that there is never more Tackle Monsters than players trying to get across field.

A variation I like to implement is:   poor tackling technique will take you out of the game.

The last player/s standing becomes the new Tackle Monster.   Kids love it!

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
