How to run this drill

Spring Youth Football is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

From Rob…
[tag]special teams football drill[/tag]
Line up 5 players on 40 yard line about 7 yards apart (including a kicker in the middle). 2 return players.

Kick off to return players with all but kicker sprinting down field. Kids stay in lanes to make tackle. Rotate return players in 3 groups of 2.   Have 4 lines of players for kickoffs and rotate 4 each time.

Kids are learning to stay in lanes, open field tackle, and getting a workout each time they sprint down field. The kids really like this [tag]football drill[/tag] and look forward to it once a week.

From Dennis…
What I like to do is the rip and swim drill.

I line my 12, 13year old kids up in a o/d lines then I put tennis balls in the gaps.   When they rip and swim they learn to step with the correct foot, as they pick up the ball. They’re low then they rip or swim out.   I work with lineman about 10 to 15 minutes on this [tag]football[/tag] drill.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
