How to run this drill

Running Back Football Drills – The Gauntlet is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

The Gauntlet
Have players line up in two lines facing each other with a few feet between them.

Have all ball handlers line up in the gap between the lines.   As the player takes a handoff and runs between the two lines each player in line tries to strip the ball loose.

This is an oldie but has helped with teams I have been associated with.   It teaches receivers the fundamentals of catching the [tag]football[/tag] and tucking it in before contact.

Position players in two parallel lines facing each other approximately two yards apart. The first receiver stands at one end approximately five yards away. On cadence, the receiver runs towards the gauntlet, receives the pass, tucks the in and runs through the gauntlet.

Instruct players on both sides to try and rip the ball loose.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
