How to run this drill

Line Backer Football Drills – 4 on 4 Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

About twice a week we use these line backer football drills. This is a great drill to see blocking, DL and LB techniques, and tackling.   We call it the 4 on 4 drill.

4 on 4 Drill
We have three blockers and one ball carrier on offense and three defensive linemen and one linebacker on defense.

The field is about 10 yards wide and 15 yards long marked off with cones.

The offense has 4 plays to get a touchdown.

We have a coach who stands behind the defense and signals what hole the back is to run through.

After each play, the ball is marked by a coach and the offense line up on the new line of scrimmage.

On each play, a new ball carrier has to run so that all players get a chance to run.

To make this really competitive, have the kids pick teams and have the “winners” stay on the field and the “losers” take a short run.

If the defense wins, they go to offense against a new team and if the offense wins, they go to defense against a new team.   Great drill!!

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
