How to run this drill

Line Backer Blitz Walk-through Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

The goal of this drill is to get the LB’s into position as quickly as possible and watching the football. This drill is designed for a 5-3 or a 4-4 defense.

Line Backer Blitz Walk-through Drill
All players get into positions
Set up Cones to designate gaps between linemen on both sides of D-line
Coaches form the O-line holding push pads
A cut-out of a football or any object attached to a lead with numbers or colors on each side

Using a whistle to simulate start of play, first blow marks first sound from quarterback, LB’s are to rush into slots beside appropriate D-linemen.     If running with 3 LB’s, MLB shoots gaps to the left or right of NG.

Since the goal of this drill is to get the LB’s into position as quickly as possible and watching the football, they have to be in their slots and yell the number/color that is showing on the cut-out within 1 – 2 seconds of the first whistle.

If the whistle blows again before they are in position and yell the number/color, they are too slow.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
