How to run this drill

Free Coaching Youth Football Help – Stop the Fumble is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

Try this [tag]free coaching youth football help[/tag] tip with your youth team.   It is is a [tag]football drill[/tag] that I’ve used with 11-12 year olds to break them of a fumbling problem. It is used with just 1-2 individuals per [tag]football practice[/tag], not everyone.

The running back is shown how to properly hold the football when running with it. He is given a ball and instructed to ensure that it does not hit the ground for any reason, except a bathroom trip, during practice. He holds it during every drill, including up/downs. Yes, up/downs can be done, but you’ll need to tell the younger kids to make sure they are landing on their forearm and not their wrist.

The coaches, at any point and without warning, will attempt to knock the ball out of their grip. If the ball comes out, the back owes push ups. If the back is very vigilant about the location of the coaches, he secretly gives 1 or 2 players permission to knock out the balls also.

Warning, at the beginning of this [tag]football[/tag] drill, announce the drill to the entire team. Then, tell them that anyone who touches one of the backs without permission gets 100 push ups. That stops any potential problems before they can start.

Each time I’ve done it, it hasn’t taken more than 2-3 practices before the ball hold position becomes second nature and the fumbling stops.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
