How to run this drill

Football Training Drills – Pass Rushing Defensive Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

One of my favorite defensive drills is this Pass Rushing Drill.   Even though it is a defensive drill to work on pass rushing, the other linemen can work on their drive blocking techniques to counter the defender and this should make everybody that much better.

Pass Rushing Defensive Drill
1: Line up 5 linemen behind each other 5 yards apart acting as O-linemen.

2: Place the football 10 yards behind the last linemen.

3: One player at a time, line up in front of 1st player in 3 pt. stance.

4: On the whistle, D-linemen performs a Rip move then runs to the next teammate and gets set again. From there he performs in no particular order–SWIM, HAMMER, SPIN, and finishes with a BULL RUSH to get the ball.

Note: Defender should run to the next station, get set and wait for the whistle or a new cadence from the Coach.
After the players get better at this drill, this can be used as a warm up drill every day.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
