How to run this drill

Football Tackling Drills – Backfield Tackling is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

If you need some [tag]football tackling drills[/tag], try this one. It is a [tag]football drill[/tag] for ends, outside LB and CB. We refer to this drill for [tag]backfield tackling[/tag].

Ends fire off the line drives through TE and tackles dummy waist high and wraps with both arms.( from right side and left side )

Outside LB blitz and tackles dummy waist high and wraps with both arms. (from right side and left side )

CB Blitz and tackles dummy waist high and wraps with both arms.(from right side and left side )

Try this [tag]football coaching[/tag] tip for linebackers who need to get through the “wash” and make a tackle.   I have several stand up dummies that I place about a yard a part on both sides of the [tag]football[/tag].

There is a running back who runs to one side or the other and the linebacker must fight his way through the bags, relocate the running back (hopefully he never lost sight), then break down and make the tackle.

I stress good angles and breaking down once you’ve reached the ball carrier.   All too often I see kids fly right by a tackle looking for the big hit instead of securing the tackle.   It’s something we stress every day.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
