The [tag]football drill[/tag] that works the best for us is the drill called the Gorilla Drill. The way it works is to put three linebackers, with about ten yards of separation from a fullback, a quarterback, a running back, a center and a guard. The [tag]football coach[/tag] stands behind the linebackers and tells the offensive lineman, QB, RB and FB what to do. The linebackers have different responsibilities for each game. For example, in our last game of the season, our opponents pulled their backside guards 75% of the time and the playside guard 60% (the rest of the time he’d do a reach) so our Linebackers each have distinct reads.
WLB has to read his guard, MLB reads the fullback and SLB goes with the TE (no TE in the [tag]football[/tag] drill, but can be added, substituting him with the center) and have them go attack the play CRAWLING and have them wrap up. Then have them doing it in their regular stance.
This helps us train our linebackers to stay low at point of attacks and their play read capabilities.
