How to run this drill

Football Linebacker Drills – Contact Drill & Back Pedal Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

Here are two football linebacker drills. The first drill is for offensive and defensive linemen.   It is great for younger players especially to get them used to contact.   The second drill is for defensive backs.   Give them a try and let me know how they work for you.

O-Line & D-Line Contact Drill

1.   Take two lineman paired up against each other.
2.   I then stand as the QB.
3.   On the whistle I give the d-lineman 3-4 seconds to reach me.
4.   If he does, he gets a point; if not the o-lineman gets a point.
5.   First one to 10 wins.
6.   The losing lineman runs, does push-ups or whatever tickles my fancy that day.

This is a great drill for youth players, especially first year players to get them used to contact.

Back Pedal Drill
One drill I work on with my DB’s, is a back pedal drill.
Have them line up on the goal line and back pedal 10 yards. Then, they shift/open up their hips in the direction I point the ball in (Left/Right).

When your players start to understand the drill put another teammate against him.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
