From Matt…
This is a [tag]football drill[/tag] called “The Rodeo“.

1)   Take cones, and create a big “pen”   (30′ X 30′)   with a “gate” at the front.

2)   Place 2 “cowboys” in the middle on each side of the the pen.   (these are the linebackers)

3)   Place a “bull” (running back) at the gate.

4)   Hand the [tag]football[/tag] off on the word hike.

5)   The RB’s goal is to maintain his/her flag as long as possible.

6)   The bull with the best time wins.   The cowboy with the most flags wins.   The team of cowboys with the lowest average times win… this allows everyone a chance to do well, and enforces team play.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
