How to run this drill

Defensive Football Drills – Angle Pursuit Drill is built for youth, high-school, and volunteer coaches who need clear drill language — not a random cone circuit. Beginners can install the first progression; experienced staffs can layer competition.

  1. Read the purpose once, then walk the setup on air before live tempo.
  2. Demonstrate one clean rep so players see landmarks, pad level, and finish.
  3. Run short competitive periods — quality reps beat long lines.
  4. Close with one coaching cue players can repeat in the huddle next period.

Full drill

This is one of the defensive football drills that I like to run for pursuit angles.

Angle Pursuit Drill

Start with a running back in the back field ready to run a toss to the outside.
Have a 5-2 defense in place.
Set a cone about 5 yds outside the DE.
Send the running back off running. Once he gets to the cone, I send the back side of the defense off into the pursuit angle they need to run.
The back side including the DBs have to get to him and tackle before he gets to the other cone that I placed down the field.

This works pretty well for the right pursuit angles for my players.

Then I have the same set up for the other side of the D. and just run every other side until I am satisfied of the angles they will take.

Coaching tips

  • Keep one cue per rep so kids hear the same language every time.
  • Film the first live set; pause on footwork and finish, not just the ball.
  • Pair this drill with a matching play install so practice transfers to game day.
